The Collectorate play a pivotal role in the District Administration. Collector in the Cadre of I.A.S and APCS heads the District. He/She acts as the District Magistrate/Deputy Commissioner for maintaining Law and Order in his /her jurisdiction. The Deputy Commissioner deals mainly with planning and development, law and order, scheduled areas/agency areas, general elections, arms licensing etc.
The Assam Frontier (Administration of Justice) Regulation Act 1945 authorises the village council to settle certain criminal matters falling within their jurisdiction. However, for all matters, the Deputy Commissioner exercises full power as District & Session Judge and some other administrative officers are also vested with magisterial powers.
